History of the Library

  • In 1984, a generous donation was made by Dr. Thomas Lalor to be used as seed money for the town library. The town purchased the Kellett Funeral Home property at 169 Main Street.
  • In March of 1985, Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School students began renovations of the property with contracting assistance by S. Tulumello and Robert Rice, Design Consultant, who donated their services. Townspeople and other Massachusetts libraries generously donated books and furnishings.
  • Other than the $2,500 budgeted by the Town, all renovations and maintenance expenses were covered by fundraising monies and grants.
  • BVT students completed work on May 30, 1986 and the formal opening of the Millville Free Public Library was held on June 8, 1986.
  • In 1996 an entryway was added to the building as well as a new circulation desk. The first computers were also installed. All done with donations and state aid money.
  • In 1997 air conditioning was installed and internet access was begun.
  • In 2000, the Town allocated $25,000 to renovate the adult reading room and created a new young adult section with new shelving, paint, carpeting, and furniture.
  • In 2021, the Town allocated $16550 for capital improvements to include a new storage shed, bathroom improvements and facility repairs.
